National Carers Week 2021

National Carers Week 2021

Carers Week is a national campaign, which this year occurs between Monday, 7 June to Saturday, 12 June. The campaign aims to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers experience and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities across the UK. It also helps those who may not think of themselves as having caring responsibilities, to identify as carers and learn more about the services that might support them.

In recognition of Carers Week, Bracknell Forest Council would like to highlight their Young Carers Service. A young carer is someone under 18 who helps look after someone in their family, or a friend, who is ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol.

Extra responsibilities may include:

•practical tasks, such as cooking, housework and shopping

•physical care, such as helping someone out of bed

•emotional support, such as talking to someone who is distressed

•personal care, such as helping someone dress

•managing the family budget and collecting prescriptions

•helping to give medicine

•helping someone communicate

•looking after brothers and sisters

Young carers are entitled to an assessment, regardless of who is being cared for, what type of care is provided or how often the care is provided. The assessment will take into account if the young person is doing any age inappropriate care, or whether the caring responsibilities affect a young person’s physical health, education, emotional well-being and relationships with family and friends.

Most assessments are completed by someone the young person knows, for example, a teacher at school or another professional who may be supporting the family and young person.

Bracknell Forest Council's Young Carers Team is keen to hear from you and discuss any questions you may have about how to obtain a young carers assessment, and also to be given information of other carer support networks.

You can contact their young carers service directly by:
